First thing I have to say. This is an anime about a bunch of unsound people. Not the usual stuff, here you have people with problems. That makes anime both interesting and, at times, disturbing. So, here I go, hope this post won’t me too long (though it will, probably).
First, the main character, Hachiman Hikigaya
Hachiman Hikigaya is a lonely guy, in a sense that he has no friend and he hasn’t got a girlfriend. Some time ago, when he was younger and more alive he tried to approach a girl, whom he liked, but was rejected. That made him lose some of his self-confidence. A typical story most of the guys came through that. But in his particular case the thing hit him hard. He decided to become a hedgehog, so there will be no interaction with girls in his life ever again. And to protect his feelings he made up this idea that all the people, who enjoy their youth are lying. In short, he needed some help, at this point.
On the other hand he clearly is smart and has an open mind, which makes him an interesting character to watch and gives a way to changes in his personality. But mind you, he isn’t a nice person.
Second, the teacher, Shizuka Hiratsuka.
So far Shizuka Hiratsuka is a quite annoying character for me. I know something about teaching and people like her should not be allowed to come close to kids. She even said to Hikigaya something like “You should die”. That is so overboard. In the real life you can and should be fired after that. And on top of that she seems stupid, which does not make her interesting to watch. But whatever, she is only a supporting character.
Third, Yukino Yukinoshita, the female lead character
That is the second main character. Yukino Yukinoshita is an attractive girl, as she states herself dozen of times. Basically she has the same problem as Hikigaya, but her personality i sway different, so she behave in a different manner.Namely, she takes on the task to teach others, how they should be. I like how she tells Hikigaya “I will fix your problems for you” when she has exactly the same ones. Also, she acts very cold towards others. That coldness goes so far, that when at one point Yui says that what Yukinoshita told her was cool, Yukinoshita ask her “Are you sure you listened, I tried to put it harsh”, or something like that.
She is a smart persone, and just like Hikigaya she has a lot of interesting ideas. I expect her to change a lot during the series. At the very least, I hope she will become nicer.
Yuigahama, Yui is the most normal of the people there. She listen to Yukinoshita without being offended, which is a talent by itself. Also, she showed signs of stereotypical tsundere behavior, which is inevitable, probably.
For me, the first episode of this show was not about comedy or relations. It was about discussing things. First, there was this quite interesting discussion of Hikigaya and his problems. Yukinoshita attacked him pretty badly, telling him that he should change his ways and such. He was quite depressed, though he did not crack or broke down. Next time they met he asked her if she has any friends, and it came out that she hasn’t. She put up an excuse that she is too pretty and people fall for her. See any logic here? Me neither. I wonder what the real reason will be.
There is some comedy there too, not just talk. So, don’t worry.
There were more interesting points made in the show. Here is one of them. Hikigaya said “Changing is like running away from the present. Why can’t you just accept who you are now, and who you were before”. Yukinoshita said that this way problems will stay. Just how often you hear something like that in an anime? And, what do you think, is one of them wrong? Think about it.
I don’t know if I will watch this anime through. I will watch the next episode and decide, I think. Till the next time (^_^)/
