Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan), episode 9. Skeleton?

When I watched this episode I couldn’t believe that it is already over. If I could I would have started watching the next one right after that. Too bad I can’t.

In this episode we got new characters, that are, most likely, going to be significant. And they are likable too. Here are they:

Shingeki no Kyojin episode 9 Levi and Hanji

Levi “Rivaille, Lance Corporal” on the right, Hanji Zoé on the left

Levi is a really powerful fighter. He can take on two titans at once without panicking or being desperate. He seems to have the same goal as Eren, to destroy all the titans. But his personality is way different. And that is a good thing, two Eren-like man would be too much.

Shingeki no Kyojin episode 9 Levi

Levi has a cool head, which is something humanity really needs

Also, it is said that Levi is a “clean freak”. I guess they meant to say that he has an obsession with cleanliness. They showed that he did not like to have Titans blood in he hands and was wiping it out in the middle of the fight.

Shingeki no Kyojin episode 9 Levi's hand

At the same time, they showed that he is willing to grab a hand of a soldier, covered in blood. I guess they meant to say that someone’s live is even more precious for him than his cleanliness

Hanji, unlike Levi, is quite passionate. She seems to be interested in Titans, though that looks like an act, as she kills them anyway.

But she plays with them first ^_^

After they showed us the new guys, they made a little Eren flashback. You remember I was making theories about that Eren transformed the titan that ate him? I was wrong :D Eren himself became a titan. Here (lots of blood, sorry):

Shingeki no Kyojin episode 9 Eren transforms into a titan

And he transformed while being inside this old man titan, which makes it even messier

And so, it seems that Eren can transform into a titan now. I wonder how it all works. I thought that titans were being piloted by unconscious humans, that were eaten by titans. We still have no prove to that theory. But we know that a human can turn into a titan. Witch means that titans might originally be humans. And if that is the case, then there is someone behind the scenes who made all this happen.

Oh it might be something simple, like a virus that made people transform. I am not saying that it is realistic, or convincing, but this is anime after all.

After that they moved back to the reality where Eren saw that there are soldiers all around him, who were ready to kill him.

Shingeki no Kyojin episode 9 Kitts Verman

I am not going to talk about this at length, just want to say that this man is stupid

So, what happens is that this dude on the picture above drives Eren into a corner and Eren, in the moment of desperation, learns how to use his power and turns into a titan to save Armin and Mikasa.

Shingeki no Kyojin episode 9 Eren as a skeleton titan

This time he looks like a skeleton

Lets take another look at this new form:

Shingeki no Kyojin episode 9 Eren skeleton titan

He has no arms, no legs, close to no flesh

Why exactly he is so different here? He was able to instantly turn into a normal titan when he was eaten. Why wasn’t he able to do it now. My guess is that he is exhausted. He can’t used this power over and over, he need time to rest. So now, when he forced himself to use it again, he wasn’t able to achieve the complete form.

Now, what will happen next? I don’t think that those military guys will be satisfied untill they kill him. But we know that Levi is heading there. So I think that he will resolve this situation. He might dislike Eren for what he is, but I think he won’t let them kill one of their own. Not to mention that it is a really useful power that Eren has.

Also, as we saw, Eren father asked Eren to retake the wall Maria (which is a lot to ask of a boy) and get to the basement of their home (which is going to be important, I feel). So, hope they will move in this direction in the next episode.

By the way, here is a promotion video for Attack on Titan phone app made by Crunchyroll:

Hope you liked this episode. See you next time (^_^)/

  1. I think his father is fundamental to knowing some real facts about the titans. Maybe the kind of evidence they need to defeat the titans is in that basement. Maybe the whole titan thing came from some experiment gone wrong.
I think he was tired too and not too focused but desperate why he became a skele-titan. The last scene was my favorite part of the episode.

    • I like the idea about the experiment, it makes sense. About the basement, I think that Eren’s father could just go to the central city and tell people whatever he knows and make them go there. That is why I don’t write alot about that injection and Eren’s father role in all tis. It seems like a potential plot hole.

      • I think it’s a matter of entrusting that sort of information to family. And as his dad said, Eren would be able to make sense of everything when the time came so there was no need to explain anything to him.

Maybe his father knew the titans would take Wall Maria and put everything in place so Eren could have enough power to go back and get whatever’s in that basement.
I think the obscurity of his dad’s involvement in all this is done for plot effect but I hope – as you say – that it doesn’t turn into a plot hole. Maybe it’ll all come together in the later episodes. So far, Shingeki is only giving us bits and pieces of the damn jigsaw puzzle >_<.

        • Well, I think when the fate of humanity depends on some information, it is not a good idea to bet it all on the ability of one kid to survive. Also, if Eren’s dad can calculate all this before hand.. that kind of makes him too smart =) But I too hope that there will be a good explanation for all of it. So far the writting was good, so, maybe, they will surprise us by how it goes.

          • That’s usually a cliche in anime – in lots of shows – putting major responsibility on a single person. But I guess Shingeki will be able to pull it off :)
Surprise us with a big bang! As how it’s been doing so far.
