Here is a confession. I honestly didn’t think that Utsuro’s parting words were in fact a threat.
Of course I expected Utsuro to come back but I didn’t realize that he had made plans to continue his carnage after getting revived. The way I saw it, Utsuro always thought that to live is to suffer. So it would make sense for him to pity the humans who foiled his plans to destroy humanity and chose to continue living, doesn’t it?
Gintoki, who knew Utsuro well, knew what his last words meant and set out to find his next incarnation. He went searching through all the Altana reserves for him.
This has got to be one of the stupidest mistakes made by Sorachi. Or more like, Sorachi simply refuses to acknowledge that Japan is not the only country in the world. Gintoki didn’t even have to step out of the country. Utsuro got magically reincarnated in Japan again.
Gintoki searched all over Japan, found baby Utsuro and tried to kill him.
To be honest, in that moment, Gintoki was no different from the people who turned Utsuro into the monster he ended up becoming. Imagine what it would have felt like to be in Utsuro’s shoes. Here he was in a tiny helpless form and his former student, a kid he had fed and raised, was trying to kill him yet again, just because he might end up becoming a bad guy.
I know the whole ordeal was heartbreaking for Gintoki as well but it doesn’t change the fact that he was about to give Utsuro the short end of the stick again. That he, a human, was about to let Utsuro down again. Gintoki ended up taking care of Utsuro and watching him grow. Here are a couple of nice pictures of Utsuro.
Utsuro was surprised that Gintoki was willing to save him from falling down and dying again. Think about it for a moment. It makes perfect sense for an adult to offer a hand to a child who is about to fall to his death and yet, Utsuro was surprised that someone would be willing to offer him a hand. Why? Because he probably had people watch him die without moving a muscle before. He would regenerate or reincarnate anyway and chances are, people didn’t care about him getting hurt or getting killed. This is why I said Gintoki let Utsuro down when he pointed a blade at him. Utsuro deserves to be treated like a human for once.
I also don’t think Utsuro and Shoyo are different people and I don’t believe that Utsuro has multiple personalities. I think of them as two different emotions of the same person.
Too bad we couldn’t get to see more of these nice random moments with Utsuro. Tendoshu attacked them and Utsuro ripped out his own heart and handed it over to Gintoki because he didn’t want it to fall into Tendhoshu’s hands.
I am looking forward to the next episode. Gintoki and Takasugi decided to join hands and rescue Utsuro.
See you next time ^^/
